Irritable Bowels and Alternative Healing

When you suffer with Irritable Bowels you can find your life severely disrupted because although the condition is not dangerous, the fact that it is incurable can be very difficult to live with. This is because the symptoms associated with irritable bowels are uncomfortable, sometimes painful and at times require urgent use of the bathroom.

Nowadays there is a growing array of modern medicines which can be purchased over the counter to help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. However, some people prefer to choose an alternative method and look towards traditional healing to try and rid themselves of the discomfort caused by irritable bowels. Here are some of the more popular types of alternative healing being used by people today:
  • Acupuncture - This is an ancient art based on the knowledge of Qi (pronounced chi). It is thought that a blockage or imbalance in a person's Qi can contribute to various illnesses. Acupuncturists will attempt to remove this blockage by the use of small needles. These needles are used to stimulate the various pressure points located in different areas of the body. This stimulation then makes it possible for a person's Qi to flow freely and become balanced. Acupuncture is also widely used by practitioners to relieve stress and induce a feeling of relaxation. Some people find the thought of needles quite intimidating however an experienced practitioner will be able to perform the procedure with minimum discomfort. This is because the needles used in acupuncture are too small to actually cause pain to nerves. However, if you simply cannot face the thought of needles, you could try acupressure. Acupressure stimulates nerves and pressure points by massaging the specific points either with the fingers or a small blunt instrument in place of needles.

  • Herbal Remedies - Herbal remedies are becoming increasingly popular among people suffering the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. These are usually taken in either capsule form or brewed into a tea. Herbs such as peppermint make a wonderfully soothing tea especially recommended for excess gas, bloating and stomach cramps. Aniseed is another useful herb that can be brewed to help relieve flatulence. Cinnamon is a popular herb traditionally used to alleviate diarrhea while Fennel is extremely beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Senna is probably the most well known herb used to relieve constipation however if taken to excess it can produce uncomfortable side effects including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and dehydration so should be used with extreme caution.

  • Hypnosis - For some people suffering with Irritable Bowels especially when stress is a factor, hypnosis can be extremely helpful at easing the symptoms. Digestive problems have long been linked with tension and anxiety. Relaxation techniques and hypnosis can assist in calming both the mind and body thus promoting a feeling of wellbeing and balance.
