Binge drinking is extremely common. According to a report from
January 2012, 17 percent of adults in the United States drink in large
quantities. The younger a person is, the more likely he or she is to
binge drink. In fact, 28 percent of drinkers who binge are between the
ages of 18 and 24.
Many people do not think that binging is a big deal. However, it does represent an alcohol abuse problem and can have serious repercussions. Below are some of the serious problems that have been linked with heavy drinking:
Dangers of Binge Drinking
Car Accidents
Unfortunately, alcohol plays a role in 31 percent of the traffic accident deaths that occur each year in the United States. Why is this? Remember that alcohol is a depressant and a person's reaction time is also slowed when he or she drinks, putting everyone in danger. Also, alcohol impairs our judgment and makes it difficult to see the consequences of our decisions. Even riding as a passenger in a car with a person who has been drinking can result in injury or harm.
Serious Injuries
People who binge drink are at higher risk to suffer from a fall, experience severe burns, or serious injury than the general population. Many people who binge drink experience social pressure to do things they otherwise would not do under the influence of alcohol.
Missed Work Or School
While many people think of binge drinking as a weekend activity, it isn't that way for everyone. In fact, many drinkers miss work or school because of their habit. Students who chronically drink may be dismissed from school. People who frequently miss work due to their drinking problem may lose their job or face a reprimand at work.
Life Threatening Health Conditions
Many people think that a hangover is the worst thing that can happen after a night of heavy drinking. On the contrary, excessive alcohol consumption can have more serious effects on a person's health. Alcoholic liver disease, high blood pressure and stomach cancer are just a few of the many health problems that have been linked to chronic binge drinking. Furthermore, it is important to note that people who drink large amounts of alcohol can also suffer alcohol poisoning in a short amount of time.
There are a number of serious problems that can result from binge drinking, including physical harm, illness or even injury. Fortunately, there is help available. Many people who suffer from alcohol abuse problems or alcoholism find that rehab, meetings and ongoing recovery support allow them to regain control in their lives.
